“Reaching Back ~ Moving Forward”
The foundation of In Her Honor is based on the meaning of the word “Sankofa”, which is an African word from the Akan tribe in Ghana.
The literal translation of the word is “it is not taboo to fetch what is at risk of being left behind.” We believe it is on the strength of our ancestors that we have achieved success in our lives, so it is our obligation to provide the same level of love, guidance, care, and support to those that come after us.
This life does not provide the luxury of being able to achieve anything in a vacuum, and it is through the village that we move forward. Our village consists of strong, educated, caring individuals who are committed to the principles of our organization.
OUR STORY
In Her Honor was established in memory of Sharon E. Broadnax, after a conversation between the founders on the importance of honoring our ancestors and living into legacy.
Sharon was a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who loved not only her children, but all children. Sharon passed away in September 2020, after a fearless battle with MS. After the loss of Sharon, the family wanted to commemorate the love and support she had always provided their family and all children she encountered. Not only did they want to honor Sharon, but also the other amazing women who have been the matriarchs of their family (Della E. Ervin & Laura L. Murrell).
WHAT WE DO
We serve youth & their families
With a heart to support families we serve African American youth, ages 8-21, with positive support, resources, and guidance to empower them to succeed in every area of their life.
We believe together "the village" can help our young people succeed.
In Her Honor seeks to be a change agent in the lives of young people.
It is our mission to enable youth to realize their potential and attain success by providing a caring and supportive environment and emphasizing the important elements of mental wellness, mentoring, education, athletics, and positive self-awareness.
Our primary goal is to make a significant difference in the lives of youth through effective and caring service, ensuring they are safe and cared for in the process.
